People have always been told what is socially acceptable for everyone. Boys and girls have a different set of standards. We are told that boys are meant to be strong, have little emotion, and play with monster trucks. We are told that girls are meant to be soft, wear pink dresses, and play with baby dolls. Society gives us all these rules that make us look weird if we do not conform. When I was a child, I always received footballs, Hot Wheels, and video games as gifts. My sister would get Barbies, stuffed animals, and pink Easy Bake Ovens as her gifts. I remember wondering why my sister didn't like to get the kind of gifts that I got. Everyone told me it was simply because "she is a girl." Similarly, I wondered why I never got an Easy Bake Oven. It looked like fun, but it was only for girls, so I never asked for one. Society taught me that as a boy, I should play with Hot Wheels and footballs, not Easy Bake Ovens and stuffed animals.
It's funny how you grew up playing with Hot Wheels and footballs and now you drive a sports car and are QB for the high school football team
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely interesting that you knew you were "supposed" to have different interests than your sister at such a young age. Makes us realize how we are conformed to society before we even have the chance to form an opinion about it.
ReplyDeleteTravis, I also loved easy bake ovens as a child. I think that it is really cool that you liked them too, so we share the same experience.
